Death Toll in Syria and Türkiye Surpasses 4,000

Many are still trapped under the rubble of buildings after the magnitude 7.8 quake hit Turkey and neighboring Syria early on Monday.

Turkey's death toll rose to nearly 2,921 people, AFAD head Yunus Sezer said. Nearly 8,000 people have been rescued from 4,758 buildings destroyed in the tremors a day earlier, Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) said in its latest statement.

On the Syrian side, at least 1,444 people were killed and about 3,500 injured according to figures from the Damascus government and rescue workers in the northwestern region controlled by insurgents.

On Tuesday, another earthquake of 5.6 magnitudes struck central Turkey, the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said.

The 7.8 magnitudes earthquake brought down whole apartment blocks in Turkish cities and piled more devastation on millions of Syrians displaced by years of war.
