Best New Banknote of 2025 Title Goes to UAE’s AED 500

The Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates (CBUAE) has made history by winning the Best New Banknote Issue for 2025 award in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region. This prestigious recognition was announced at the High Security Printing EMEA conference held in Basel, Switzerland in early February 2025. The banknote, which features a new design for the 500 Dirham, stands as a symbol of the UAE’s commitment to sustainability and innovative financial solutions.

A Banknote Reflecting the UAE’s Sustainability Vision

The 500 Dirham banknote highlights the UAE’s forward-thinking approach to sustainability. The Central Bank ensured that the design of this new currency aligns with the nation’s environmental goals, reflecting the UAE's journey in adopting sustainable practices in various sectors.

The banknote features advanced security technologies and three-dimensional designs, building on the success of the award-winning AED 1000 banknote issued in 2023. These innovations have helped the CBUAE become a trailblazer in the region, earning the UAE the distinction of being the first Middle Eastern country to introduce banknotes with the largest surface-applied foil stripe.

Advanced Security Features for Modern Times

One of the standout features of this 500 Dirham banknote is its state-of-the-art security technology. The integration of advanced security features ensures protection against counterfeiting, while also enhancing the overall visual appeal of the banknote. This commitment to security is not just about safeguarding currency but also establishing the UAE as a global leader in adopting new technologies.

This banknote is part of the third polymer series and is printed by Oumolat Security Printing, a subsidiary fully owned by the Central Bank. It was first introduced into circulation on November 30, 2023, as part of the country’s continued move towards sustainable solutions.

Sustainability Through Innovation

In a step towards sustainability, the CBUAE opted to use polymer material for the new banknote. This material is not only more durable than traditional paper banknotes but also fully recyclable, which significantly reduces its environmental impact. The move to polymer is in line with the UAE's efforts to transition to a green economy, ensuring a more sustainable future for all.

Design Symbolism: A Glimpse into the Future

The front side of the banknote showcases the Terra Sustainability Pavilion in Expo City Dubai. This architectural marvel symbolizes the UAE's commitment to a sustainable future, echoing the principles set by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder of the UAE.

On the reverse side, the design shifts to the Museum of the Future in Dubai, bridging the past with the future. This stunning piece of architecture is a reminder of the UAE’s relentless drive toward innovation. Also featured on the reverse are images of iconic landmarks such as Emirates Towers and the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building. The Burj Khalifa is a beacon of sustainability, as it harnesses solar power to meet much of its energy needs.

Inclusivity for All

In a step towards inclusivity, the CBUAE has included Braille symbols on the 500 Dirham banknote. This initiative ensures that blind and visually impaired consumers can easily identify and determine the value of the banknote, making it more accessible to everyone.

A Statement of Progress

The award marks a significant milestone in the UAE’s continued dedication to sustainability and innovative financial solutions. According to HE Saif Humaid Al Dhaheri, Assistant Governor of Banking Operations & Support Services at CBUAE, the recognition reflects the Central Bank’s dedication to advancing security, minimizing environmental impact, and ensuring inclusivity for all users.

“The 500 Dirham banknote winning the Banknote of the Year award is a testament to our dedication to sustainability and innovation. We are proud to lead the region in introducing banknotes with advanced security features and materials that minimize environmental impact,” said Al Dhaheri.

With this achievement, the Central Bank of the UAE has set a new benchmark for sustainable banking and continues to solidify its leadership in the region's financial sector.
