Arab Writers Win Prizes at the US National Book Award

Palestinian-American poet Lena Khalaf Tuffaha and Syrian-American author Shifa Saltagi Safadi secured wins at the US National Book Award.

Tuffaha won in the poetry category for her poetry collection 'Something About Living', while Safadi won in the young people's literature for her novel Kareem Between. 

Tuffaha's poetry collection weaves Palestinian history with the challenges the poetess faces in a world filled with violence.

On the other hand, Safadi's novel is a coming-of-age story about a seventh-grade Syrian-American boy and his struggles in school life. 

Both Arab writers received a $10,000 cash prize; authors who won in other categories also received a similar prize. 

The US National Book Award recognizes the best works published by American authors across several categories.
