The tremors were centered 2.5 kilometres south of Julian, which is a mountain town east of San Diego and 32.19 kilometers from the US border of Mexico. The tremor was 12.87 kilometers deep, according to the geologists.

A series of smaller aftershocks followed the initial quake, but there were no reports of initial damage, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office substation in Julian.

The shaking was felt in Orange County and Los Angeles County to the north.

According to the UGS data, a 3.3 earthquake also hit near Julian on Sunday, Apr. 13.

Earthquakes in California

South California has previously been hit by major earthquakes including the 1994 quake that hit Northridge, in the Los Angeles area, which killed dozens of people and caused damage to homes and infrastructure worth billions of dollars.

The San Francisco earthquake of 1906, which also caused a tsunami, is believed to have killed over 3,000 people, some of who died because of the fires that erupted after the earthquake.
