The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, declared yesterday that the rapidly spreading outbreak of monkeypox is a global health emergency, the highest warning level for the organization.

The World Health Organization's description of monkeypox as a "global health emergency of international concern" aims to raise the alarm that a coordinated international response is needed and could trigger global funding and efforts to cooperate in the exchange of vaccines and treatment.

Two sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Reuters earlier that members of a panel of experts who met on Thursday to discuss the potential recommendation were divided over the decision, but that the final decision rested with the organization's director-general.

Tedros announced his decision to declare a state of health emergency during a statement to the media in Geneva and stressed that the committee was unable to reach a consensus.

It is noteworthy that more than 16,000 cases of monkeypox have been recorded in more than 60 countries so far this year, with five deaths in Africa.

The viral disease is spread by close contact and causes flu-like symptoms and pus-filled blisters on the skin.
