A 61-year-old weightlifter named Carl Hughes was killed during a workout at his home gym in Rhos-on-Sea, Wales. A heavy metal bar fell on his neck and suffocated him.
Mr. Hughes' neighbor found him dead in his apartment after going to check on him. The neighbor became concerned when Mr. Hughes did not collect his morning newspaper, and found him crushed under a weight bench.
When Carl Hughes was found dead on September 9, he was lying on a weight bench in his bedroom with a barbell on his neck. An autopsy determined that he died of asphyxiation caused by neck compression from the barbell. Toxicology tests were ordered to check for any substances in his body.
