The UAE is set to witness a breathtaking celestial event as the Quadrantids meteor shower prepares to illuminate the night sky. Following the New Year's fireworks, this spectacular meteor shower, dubbed as “one of the best” annual meteor showers, will peak on January 4.
Astronomy Group Anticipation
The Dubai Astronomy Group (DAG) has highlighted the significance of this annual meteor shower. Named after the now-defunct Quadrans Muralis constellation, this event is renowned for its intense bursts, creating a celestial spectacle originating from the asteroid 2003 EH1. Experts anticipate up to 60 meteors per hour during its peak.
Uniqueness of Quadrantids
What sets the Quadrantids apart is their rarity and intensity. It is recognized for its bright fireball meteors that shine brighter and longer than typical meteor streaks. The DAG emphasizes their short-lived yet remarkable outbursts, making them a standout event in the astronomical calendar.
How to Watch the Quadrantids Meteor Shower?
Stargazers eager to witness this celestial spectacle need not possess specialized equipment. Finding a dark spot away from city lights, such as a desert location, provides the perfect setting. Observers lying flat on their backs can enjoy this natural show, with their eyes adjusting to the darkness within approximately 30 minutes.
But for those who want the perfect setting, the DAG plans an event at Dubai’s Al Qudra Desert from 11 PM to 4 AM. Tickets for the event range from Dh80-140.
