The UAE could experience more frequent heavy rainfall and a rise in average temperatures over the next decade, according to experts from the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM). Dr. Mohammed Al Abri, director of the Meteorology Department, indicated that rainfall intensity could increase by 10 to 20 percent, with average temperatures projected to climb by about 1.7 degrees Celsius.

Preparing for Extreme Weather

Dr. Al Abri emphasized the importance of proactive planning as the country faces potentially severe weather shifts, similar to the unusual heavy rains experienced last April. "We’re expecting a noticeable rise in rainfall rates over the next 10 years, and early warnings are essential—even if forecast accuracy varies," he said during a seminar hosted by Dubai Police on crisis and natural disaster management.

To tackle these changes, the UAE relies on a robust meteorological infrastructure, which includes 140 weather stations across land and sea, seven weather radars, and other advanced monitoring tools to collect and analyze crucial data. These systems will support efforts to respond to climate-related challenges in the UAE and neighboring regions in the years to come.

With these forecasts, officials aim to ensure that the UAE is better equipped to manage the anticipated impacts of climate change.
