This amnesty period will allow the residents either to renew their visas or leave the country without incurring fines.

The country's Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security launched this initiative on Thursday, Aug. 1.

The decision has been welcomed by many because the amnesty period will allow people to return to their home countries after overstaying because they cannot pay the fines they have incurred.

Now, the penalty is AED50 per day for visitors or residents who overstay after their visas have expired.

Residency visa holder are generally given six months to leave the country or change their visa status.

The amnesty period is for those individuals who stay beyond the six months.
