The UAE backed two key resolutions during an emergency special session at the United Nations, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and lifting sanctions on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). The resolutions, passed with overwhelming support—158 votes in favor—emphasized a more urgent demand for a ceasefire compared to similar appeals made in October and December 2023.

The United States, Israel, and seven other countries voted against the resolutions, while 13 nations chose to abstain.

Focus on Urgent Humanitarian Needs

During the session, UAE Permanent Representative to the UN, Mohamed Abushahab, highlighted the dire situation in Gaza and called for swift international action to protect civilians and improve the deteriorating humanitarian conditions.

“In light of the dangerous developments in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, particularly in Gaza, we must act urgently to stop the ongoing loss of civilian lives,” Abushahab stated.

He also stressed the importance of continuing UNRWA’s mandate until a lasting and just solution is achieved, including the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with the two-state solution.

Broader Implications of the Resolution

The Palestinian ambassador to the UN expressed gratitude to supporting delegations, emphasizing the importance of timely action. He noted that implementing the Security Council’s December 2023 resolution could have saved thousands of lives and criticized the misuse of veto powers for delaying critical decisions.

Abushahab also addressed broader regional tensions, commending last month’s ceasefire with Lebanon while condemning Israel’s actions in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, including the seizure of a buffer zone.
