Emirati snowboarder Abdullah Al Nuaimi won a gold medal at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Turin, Italy, on Wednesday, March 12.

Another UAE snowboarder, Mina Al Mazrouei, secured a bronze medal in the women's competition.  

The UAE has sent 11 athletes with disabilities to the international tournament. The two medals secured by the Emirati athletes are the first won by any team from the Middle East and North Africa region during the games. 

Al Nuaimi represented Ras Al Khaimah Club for People of Determination at the tournament, while Al Mazrouei represented Abu Dhabi Club for People of Determination.

Other than the snowboarding discipline, the UAE team is competing in snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, Alpine skiing, figure skating, and short-track speedskating.

The Special Olympics World Winter Games will run until Saturday, Mar. 15.
