Leading retailers in the UAE assured that India's export ban on non-basmati white rice would not cause an immediate impact on their businesses due to their sufficient reserves.
Last month, India imposed a ban on the export of certain varieties of white rice as a measure to control the increasing prices in the domestic market, which were affected by heavy rains that disrupted the sowing season.
Last week, the UAE made the decision to suspend rice exports for a duration of four months, including rice imports from India as well. This measure was taken to protect consumers from inflation and potential shortages in the market.
According to The National, the largest retailers in the country confirmed that the rice supply was sufficient, as they maintain a reserve of essential commodities for at least six months.
Certain stores in Dubai and Sharjah, which specialize in Indian products, have implemented a temporary restriction on sales of white rice by limiting customers to purchasing only two bags at a time.
India’s export ban does not apply to basmati rice, a long-grain variety better known overseas.
