The UAE has introduced a new pricing structure for electric vehicle (EV) charging, set to take effect from September 6. This move is part of the country’s efforts to standardize EV charging fees and promote sustainable transportation.
New Fee Structure
Under Cabinet Resolution No. 81, published in the Official Gazette on July 8, the new fees will require service providers to charge a minimum of Dh1.20 plus VAT per kWh for 'express' charging and Dh0.70 plus VAT per kWh for 'slow' charging.
Implementation Timeline
While the exact process for implementing the new fees remains unclear, the resolution states that the new pricing will be effective 60 days from its publication date, which will be September 6, 2024.
Government Regulation and Control
Abdulrahman Nabhan, CFO at Yandex, highlighted that the new fees are part of the UAE government’s efforts to regulate EV charging. Previously, charging rates varied widely, with some stations even offering free services. The Council of Ministers retains the authority to amend these fees as needed.
Promoting Sustainable Transportation
This initiative is a step towards the UAE's broader goal of promoting sustainable transportation and transitioning to a greener economy. The unified pricing structure aims to make EV charging more predictable and encourage the use of electric vehicles across the country.
By standardizing fees, the UAE hopes to support the growth of its EV infrastructure and facilitate a smoother transition to eco-friendly transportation options.
