Ancient civilizations have made all of us intrigued and interested due to their meaningful histories and the lives of the people living during those times. However, the wonders of Madurai Meenakshi Temple in the Indian State of Tamil Nadu would ponder us into thinking how advanced an ancient civilization could be as we explore the fascinating details of this temple. This temple is the largest complex in Tamil Nadu and is dedicated to Hindu Goddess Meenakshi. Her name also signifies the Fish Eye Goddess. A mysterious part about Goddess Meenakshi circles around the theory that she had been born with three breasts. Critics debate this perspective, affirming that depicting a Hindu Goddess in such a manner is unusual and awkward. Various sources indicate that this beautiful temple had been constructed upon the orders of Lord Shiva (one of the principal Hindu Gods). Since then, it has been renovated by rulers and kings who ruled over the lands for thousands of years. Let us explore this temple in detail and see how it is rightfully the jewel of Tamil Nadu.

One thing about the temple that makes one wonder why it is not included in the Great Wonders of the World is the famous Hall of a Thousand Pillars. It is regarded as one of the most artistic and magnificent pieces of architecture in any ancient structure discovered. Another secret about the Hall of a Thousand Pillars is that all these pillars had been carved out of a single piece of a huge rock. The designs are faultless, as it is almost impossible to detect any errors. People often wonder if these carvings could be the work of chisels and hammers as they look perfect. The Hall has 985 pillars and houses three presiding deities: Lord Vishnu, Shiva and Surya Deva (the Sun God). The Hall is also a striking example of the finest arts produced by the Kakatiya dynasty.

DRESS CODE OF THE TEMPLE

The Madurai Meenakshi temple follows a strict dress code pattern that all pilgrim and worshipers must follow while entering the temple. Otherwise, they would not be allowed to enter. Male worshipers must wear dhotis, formal pants, pajamas or a simple shirt. In contrast, female worshipers should wear traditional saree or suits covering themselves. These rules have been made to respect the Hindu culture and traditions while visiting a holy place.

MEENAKSHI TEMPLE DARSHAN

The entrance to the temple is free, and all devotees are welcome to attend the darshan (the rituals), which starts from early morning until afternoon or sometimes early evening. The darshan usually lasts for two to three hours, and people typically spend more time than that as they relax and explore the temple at their will. The devotees can either have a free darshan or organize special paid darshans for unique gatherings.

A POPULAR ATTRACTION

The Madurai Meenakshi Temple continues to be a popular attraction for all the tourists visiting India due to its exciting history and awe-inspiring art pieces. It is one of the main temples people love seeing in the country of temples, and if you ever plan a trip to the south of India, remember to include this in your itinerary.
