The 7-Eleven viral Japanese strawberry sando is back in Dubai! It is now available at Krema along with the Japanese mango sando.

A Japanese strawberry sando is a sandwich that features two slices of Japanese milk bread or shokupan, which are filled with cream and strawberry slices. Other than the strawberry sando,  there are various kinds of fruit sandos made.

Although the sweet and creamy snack became recently viral, it has been around from way before. Fruit sandos became popular in Japan in the early 20th century when fruit became more accessible to the public during the Taishō era (1912-1926).

Before this time, fruits were a luxury to the public and were given as gifts and consumed during special occasions. Therefore, the Taishō era increased the popularity of fruits amongst the public, which led to the rise of fruit parlors, where various kinds of delicacies featuring different fruits were served.

However, the rise of the fruit sando has been traced back to the 1940s. They were an appealing healthy snack because they did not contain sugar as a result of wartime austerities.

In more recent times, Japanese fruit sandos can be found in convenience stores or more sophisticated fruit salons in the East Asian country, but in the past few years, the aesthetic fruit sandos have become viral on social media, leading to cafes and shops around the world selling the sensational dessert.
