The national railway network was officially launched on Thursday by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai.
The main line of the UAE National Railway Network spans from Ghuweifat on the Saudi Arabian border to Fujairah and is one of the largest infrastructure projects in the area. Its engineering plan called for the construction of 593 bridges and crossings as well as nine tunnels with a combined length of 6.5 kilometers as it travels across a variety of geographical terrains. Excavation work required 120 million cubic meters to be completed.
"It connects four major ports in the country and seven logistical areas and can transport 60 million tonnes of goods annually. It was accomplished with the cooperation of 180 federal and local authorities who worked 133 million working hours,” said Sheikh Mohammed during the launch on Thursday.
