Ramadan is the month that Muslims fast during it, besides many other worships such as Reading Quraan, participating in charity activities, distributing Ramadan Iftar meal boxes for people in need and praying Taraweeh. What is Taraweeh Prayer, is it Sunnah, is it at home or Masjid, and how to pray it. Find all of that and more in the following article.

What is Taraweeh Prayer

During Ramadan, Muslims perform special prayers called Salah Al Taraweeh, which gives Ramadan night a special spirit. Therefore, Muslim men and women make sure not to miss this prayer.

How to pray Taraweeh? Taraweeh is prayed in a group after every evening’s last daily prayer (isha). For Taraweeh, Muslims gather at night for several optional rakats of prayers and to listen to and reflect on the Quran's recitation.

How Many Rakats are Taraweeh

Taraweeh is prayed in sets of two rakats each, in the same way as you would pray your normal salah. The shortest is two rakats, and you must end it with the Weter prayer.

What is the Meaning of Taraweeh as a Word?

Taraweeh is derived from the Arabic word meaning “to rest and relax”, as it is seen as a special form of Islamic meditation.

Is Taraweeh a Sunnah?

Tarawih prayers are sunnah, which means that it is optional and not obligatory. However, there is a great Ajer “reward” for doing it. Therefore, Muslims make sure not to miss Taraweeh Prayer during Ramadan.

The Benefits of Taraweeh

The Prophet said: “Whoever stands for prayer (the night prayer) during Ramadan with iman (faith), hoping for rewards, then all his/her previous sins will be forgiven.”(Bukhari and Muslim)

In addition, the Prophet said: “Whoever draws nearer (to Allah) by performing any of the (optional) good deeds in (this month) shall receive the same reward as performing an obligatory deed at any other time, and whoever discharges an obligatory deed in (this month) shall receive the reward of performing seventy obligations at any other time.”(Narrated by Ibn Khuzaymah)

Is Taraweeh at Home or Masjid

As mentioned in Sunnah, for men, Salah Al Taraweeh is better to be done at the Masjid with a group, and its Ajer is greater. However, men can pray the Taraweeh at home. On the other hand, women can pray the Taraweeh prayer at the Mosque. But according to Sunnah, it is always better for women to pray at home.
