Andy Jassy, the chief executive of Amazon.com Inc., announced in a public staff memo on Wednesday that the company will be eliminating more than 18,000 positions as part of a previously revealed workforce reduction.

The company's e-commerce and human resources departments will be the most affected by the layoff choices, which Amazon will announce starting on January 18, he added.

The reductions reflect an abrupt change for a company that just doubled its base pay threshold in an effort to compete more aggressively for talent. The cuts affect 6% of Amazon's approximately 300,000-person corporate workforce.

After Walmart, Amazon is the second-largest private employer in America with more than 1.5 million employees, including warehouse staff. As rising inflation drove firms and consumers to cut back on spending and as its share price fell by half in the previous year, it has prepared for likely slower growth.

The number of layoffs now exceeds the 11,000 reductions that Facebook parent company Meta Platforms Inc. announced last year. Amazon intends to pay severance and is still required to file specific legal notices regarding large layoffs.
