UAE Sultan AlNeyadi, together with Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev and NASA astronauts Stephen Bowen and Warren Hoburg, will be aboard the spacecraft for a duration of six months while they carry out their mission in the International Space Station.
The launch was delayed for three days and this will be the second attempt after the first was canceled just two minutes before liftoff due to an unusual data signature from the Falcon-9 rocket's ignition fluid.
However, the mission has been approved and cleared to launch after thorough system checks, with a 95% chance of favorable weather conditions on Wednesday.
UAE astronaut Sultan AlNeyadi set out on the longest Arab space mission marking a historic moment for the Emirates and making him the only second Emirati to have traveled to space. Hazza Al Mansouri was the first Emirati to travel to space and stayed on the ISS for eight days in September 2019.
This morning, NASA live-streamed the historic takeoff of the Emirati, with Al Neyadi giving an inspiring speech upon reaching his goal.
“Thank God, we made it to space. I would like to say thanks to everybody, my parents, my family, our leadership, the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre for their trust and everyone who trained us got us ready for this launch,” he stated as reported by The National‘s Sarwat Nasir.
“The launch was incredible. And, lastly, thanks to NASA and SpaceX. Go Dragon and go SpaceX.
