Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s nuclear, biological, and chemical protection forces, was killed in a bomb explosion in Moscow on Tuesday, according to Russian authorities.

The bomb, concealed in an electric scooter, detonated outside a residential building approximately 7 kilometers southeast of the Kremlin.
Kirillov’s assistant was also killed in the attack, Russia’s investigative committee confirmed. The explosive, remotely triggered, carried the equivalent of 300 grams of TNT, Russian news agency TASS reported. The crime scene has been cordoned off as forensic experts and investigators probe the incident.
The attack came just one day after Ukrainian prosecutors charged Kirillov in absentia with the use of banned chemical weapons in the war on Ukraine. Ukraine’s Security Service has accused the general of orchestrating over 4,800 instances of chemical munitions deployment since the conflict began.
A High-Profile Target
Kirillov was sanctioned by the UK in October for his alleged role in deploying chemical weapons in Ukraine. The British government described him as a key figure in Kremlin disinformation campaigns, spreading propaganda to cover up the use of "barbaric weapons."
Video footage shared on Russian Telegram channels showed emergency personnel working near a shattered building entrance, debris scattered across the ground, and two bodies lying in the snow.
While investigators continue to piece together the attack, the high-profile killing has raised questions about escalating tensions and security risks in Moscow.
