RTA Unveils Dubai’s New Solar-Powered ‘Rail Bus’
Autonomous, 3D-printed, and fully solar-powered—the future of Dubai’s public transport is here!
Dubai is gearing up for a major public transport upgrade with the introduction of the Rail Bus, an autonomous, fully solar-powered system designed to enhance mobility across the city.
Announced by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on Monday, this cutting-edge vehicle is expected to redefine sustainable urban transport.
A prototype of the Rail Bus is currently on display at the World Government Summit 2025 in Madinat Jumeirah, showcasing its sleek black-and-gold exterior, two rows of orange seats, and dedicated accessibility space for passengers with disabilities. Each carriage features 22 seats and can accommodate up to 40 passengers.
Smart, Sustainable, and Fully Integrated
Equipped with real-time journey updates, weather forecasts, and stop information, the Rail Bus aims to offer passengers a seamless travel experience. Safety instructions are clearly displayed throughout the vehicle, and control panels on either end ensure smooth operation.
Set to operate on elevated tracks, the Rail Bus will be integrated with Dubai’s existing transport network for easy first- and last-mile connectivity. Designed to reach speeds of up to 100 km/h, the vehicle will be fully autonomous and 3D-printed from recyclable materials, making it a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to traditional transport options.
Supporting Dubai’s Smart City Vision
This innovative project aligns with several of Dubai’s sustainability and transport strategies, including the UAE Net Zero 2050 Strategy, Dubai’s Zero-Emissions Public Transport Strategy 2050, and the Dubai Self-Driving Transport Strategy 2030, which aims to transition 25% of all daily trips to autonomous transport.
While an official launch date is yet to be confirmed, the Rail Bus is expected to play a key role in Dubai’s future mobility, reinforcing the city’s reputation as a global leader in smart, sustainable transport solutions.
