Qatar Launches "The Scoring Moment" Event for Sustainable Development
The State of Qatar launched an event entitled "The Scoring Moment" for sustainable development at the United Nations Headquarters, as part of its preparations to host a sustainable version of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, which is considered the most environmentally friendly in the history of world football championships.
The inauguration ceremony, which was held on the sidelines of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly, was attended by HE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, HE President Guillermo Lasso of the Republic of Ecuador, HE UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, HE Mr. Chaba Kuroshi, President of the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, and Her Excellency Mrs. Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations.
The ceremony was also attended by Her Excellency Mrs. Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi, Minister of Education and Higher Education, His Excellency Hassan Al Thawadi, Secretary-General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, and Her Excellency Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, along with a number of officials and high-level attendees from the United Nations Secretariat.
The event is inspired by General Assembly Resolution No. 76/259, which highlights the value of football in promoting sustainable development, peace, tolerance, inclusion, and climate action, and stresses the importance of the union, whether as people or nations when enjoying the power of football on November 20, at the opening of the Qatar World Cup, especially in There is a need to use this power for a better future for the present generation and for future generations.
His Excellency Hassan Al Thawadi, Secretary-General of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy opened the ceremony, which also witnessed the presence of high-level personalities representing the teams of the other 31 countries that qualified for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
In his speech, Al Thawadi said, "It gives me great pleasure to welcome you, on behalf of the State of Qatar, to an event that values and celebrates the power of football and sports and contributes to the international community's multilateral efforts in achieving the sustainable development goals."
He stressed that this gathering heralds the launch of the event, which is led by the State of Qatar and the Education Above All Foundation, an initiative designed to integrate, promote, and raise the level of football's role in achieving sustainable development goals.
The inauguration ceremony included a short film, that focused on the seventeen sustainable development goals, and identified relevant topics through compelling images and narration, stressing that the world will meet on November 20, to witness the power of football as a tool for promoting peace and development, respect for human rights, and achieving gender equality, empowering women, girls and youth and tackling climate change.
It is noteworthy that the 2022 World Cup, which is the most environmentally friendly edition in the history of the World Cup, aims to achieve tangible progress towards the sustainable development goals stipulated by the United Nations Action Plan to achieve sustainable development by 2030.
