If you're flying with Etihad Airways to the US, there are some important updates regarding pre-clearance at Abu Dhabi International Airport. Not all flights will use the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) pre-clearance facility, so let’s break down what you need to know.
Which Flights Still Have Pre-Clearance?
Currently, the CBP pre-clearance is available for the following Etihad flights to the US:
- EY 003 (New York JFK)
- EY 005 (Washington D.C. IAD)
- EY 009 (Chicago ORD)
For these flights, passengers can clear US immigration and customs before leaving Abu Dhabi. Here’s what to expect:
- Check-in opens 6 hours before departure and closes 2 hours before the flight at Terminal A.
- After clearing immigration, head to Gate F 2 hours before departure and take the bus to the CBP facility. The gate closes 75 minutes before takeoff.
- If you're transferring to these flights in Abu Dhabi, go to Gate F 2 hours before your flight and take the inter-terminal shuttle to the CBP facility.
- Eligible passengers can enjoy the US CBP lounge after completing the pre-clearance process.
Flights Without Pre-Clearance
For a limited time, the following Etihad flights will not offer pre-clearance in Abu Dhabi:
- EY 001 (New York JFK)
- EY 007 (Boston BOS)
Passengers on these flights will need to clear US immigration and customs upon arrival in the US. Here’s what you need to keep in mind:
- Check-in for these flights closes 1 hour before departure for Economy Class and 45 minutes before for Business and First Class at Terminal A.
If you’re connecting to another US destination, you’ll need to collect your baggage after clearing immigration and drop it off with your connecting airline. Your baggage won’t automatically transfer.

What is Pre-Clearance?
Pre-clearance allows passengers to complete US customs and immigration checks before boarding the plane in Abu Dhabi. This means that after landing in the US, you'll be able to skip the long immigration lines and simply exit the airport or head to your connecting flight. It’s a smooth way to speed up your journey when it’s available!
