A warning has been issued to the general public by the Criminal Investigation Department of the Sharjah Police (SP) against abusing social networking sites by engaging in conduct that violates social conventions or other people's rights and causes defamation.
The Director of the Criminal Investigation Department of Sharjah Police (SP), Colonel Omar Ahmed Abu Al Zawd, stressed the importance of community members interacting appropriately and constructively on social networking platforms.
An individual who is found using social media to defame, insult, or abuse another person will be subject to imprisonment and a fine of at least AED 250,000 and at most AED 500,000, as per UAE law. Using information technology, the Criminal Investigation Department dealt with 85 reports of abuse and six reports of defamation during the course of the previous year, taking all appropriate legal action.
He emphasized that the police enforce tough penalties for those who abuse others. The Sharjah Police use advanced technologies to track misuse of social media, Col. Ahmed continued, and he advised the people to exercise caution when using it.
