Reuters photographer Mohammed Salem won the prestigious 2024 World Press Photo of the Year award on Thursday, Apr. 18.
Salem received the award for his picture of a Palestinian mother, Inas Abu Maamar, cradling the dead body of her five-year-old niece, Saly, at the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, Gaza.
The picture was taken Oct. 17, 2023, at the hospital where Palestinians were searching for their dead relatives during the bombing in Gaza.
The awards were announced at the award ceremony in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The Reuters Global Editor for Pictures and Video, Rickey Rogers received the award on Salem's behalf.
Rogers said, "[Salem] hopes with this award that the world will become even more conscious of the human impact of war, especially on children."
Mohammed Salem is a 39-year-old Palestinian who has been working with Reuters since 2003. He also won an award in the 2010 World Press Photo competition.
Recently, Palestinian journalist Motaz Azaiza was featured in Time magazine's 'The 100 Most Influential People of 2024'.
