The Philippines plans to provide insurance, housing, and other benefits to encourage healthcare workers to stay in the country and address the worker shortage.

Government Initiative to Retain Health Workers

In an effort to tackle the significant shortage of healthcare workers in the Philippines, the government is set to offer a range of benefits, including insurance and housing, to retain medical professionals within the country. Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa highlighted these plans during a recent Palace press briefing.

Shortage of Health Workers

The Philippines currently faces a deficit of approximately 190,000 healthcare workers. To combat this, the Department of Health (DOH) is collaborating with the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to provide health insurance for medical staff.

Provision of Health Insurance

Herbosa explained that a subsidy will be provided, allowing healthcare workers to obtain health insurance for themselves and their families. This initiative includes PhilHealth coverage and additional health insurance options.

Housing Benefits

Beyond insurance, the DOH is partnering with the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development and the Pag-IBIG Fund to offer housing benefits to healthcare workers. These measures are designed to improve their living conditions and make staying in the Philippines more attractive.

Encouraging Local Employment

Secretary Herbosa expressed hope that these benefits would persuade healthcare workers to remain in the country rather than seek employment abroad. “I’m asking the nurses to choose the Philippines,” he urged.
