The Northern Emirates will likely adopt a mandatory health insurance program in the first quarter of 2023.
Executives in the industry claim that in addition to inquiries, several businesses have already begun insuring their workers. Currently, it is anticipated that mandatory health insurance will be implemented by the end of Q1 2023. According to Hitesh Motwani, chief marketing officer of InsuranceMarket.ae, “As of now, mandatory health insurance is expected to be rolled out by end of Q1 2023. We have been getting inquiries and in fact, have ensured a lot of groups from the Northern Emirates.”

In Abu Dhabi and Dubai, health insurance is mandated by law. Employers and sponsors in Abu Dhabi are required to provide health insurance to their workforce and their families. In Dubai, employers are obligated to offer their staff health insurance coverage. Sponsors are required to get insurance for the resident dependents.
Toshita Chauhan, business unit head for health and motor insurance at Policybazaar UAE, confirmed that they are also receiving inquiries from the Northern Emirates and that this should happen as soon as the implementation date is publicly revealed by the appropriate authorities.
The range of insurance premiums is fairly broad, depending on the level of coverage selected, Chauhan said health insurance policies are anticipated to cost as little as Dh650 and as high as Dh3,000 per person.
“As of now, the Northern Emirates plans don't have a minimum level of cover like the Dubai or Abu Dhabi plans which allow insurers to price very aggressively. The premium for Northern Emirates policies starts at Dh400-plus VAT and can go even lower if the groups are bigger in sizes,” Motwani said, in comparison to Dubai's standard coverage plan, which costs Dh650, Northern Emirates insurance often begin at Dh400.
