North Korea is set to reopen borders in December this year for foreign tourists after restrictive border controls since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Beijing-based Koryo Tours announced on Wednesday that North Korea will be welcoming international visitors to to the northeastern city of Samjiyon and “likely the rest of the country” in December 2024.

Tourists will be able to visit Samjiyon at the end of 2024 after the country has been closed to tourists since 2020, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

International flights to and from North Korea resumed in 2023 when a small group of Russian tourists flew there for a private tour in February.

However, the opening of borders in December this year is expected to rejuvenate the tourism sector in the country after four years.
