Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded a Dh165 million contract to widen and upgrade the entrances to Mall of the Emirates, including the surrounding streets and intersections. The project aims to improve traffic flow, pedestrian access, and cycling lanes.

New Bridge on Sheikh Zayed Road

A key part of the project is the construction of a 300-meter bridge on Sheikh Zayed Road. This bridge, which will have a single lane, will provide direct access to the Mall of the Emirates parking lots for drivers coming from Abu Dhabi and Jebel Ali.

Upgrades to Umm Suqeim Intersection

The project also involves expanding the current ramp at Umm Suqeim intersection. The intersection will be improved to facilitate the movement of vehicles from Umm Suqeim Street to the existing bridge leading to the mall's parking lots.

Improvements Around the Mall

Further enhancements include:

- Upgrading 2.5 km of surface roads around the Mall of the Emirates.

- Developing three signalized intersections.

- Modifying the bus station at the Mall of the Emirates Metro Station.

- Converting the street next to Kempinski Hotel from one-way to two-way.

- Enhancing pedestrian and cycling lanes.

These upgrades will also cover paving, lighting, traffic signals, rainwater drainage, and landscaping.

Reduced Travel Times

According to Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, the project will significantly reduce travel time for traffic coming from Abu Dhabi and Jebel Ali to the Mall of the Emirates, cutting it from 10 minutes to just one minute. Additionally, travel time for motorists coming from Umm Suqeim will be reduced from 15 minutes to 8 minutes.

Boosting Mall Accessibility

Mall of the Emirates, which opened in 2005, attracts over 40 million visitors annually. It features 454 stores, 96 restaurants and cafes, and entertainment venues like Ski Dubai and the largest VOX Cinema in the Middle East. The mall also includes luxury hotels and is directly connected to the Mall of the Emirates Metro Station via a pedestrian bridge.
