Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared victory in the 2024 elections, securing his third consecutive term. Modi's coalition, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), won over half of the seats in the Lok Sabha, India's lower house of Parliament.
Historic Third Term
Modi's victory marks the first time in over 60 years that an Indian prime minister has won three consecutive terms. The six-week election saw nearly 1 billion eligible voters participate, highlighting the scale of the world's largest democracy.
Election Results and Voter Turnout
The NDA has won approximately 295 of the 543 seats in the Lok Sabha, while the opposition coalition, INDIA, gained over 230 seats.
Modi's Coalition Falls Short of Target
Despite the victory, the BJP's celebrations were muted. The party had aimed to win 400 seats but fell short of this target. Nonetheless, the NDA's majority ensures that Modi will continue to lead the government.
