UAE marks a new history—July 18 is now Union Pledge Day, a celebration of the meeting that led to the UAE's formation on December 2, 1971. This day marks when Sheikh Zayed and the rulers of other emirates signed the declaration of the Union and the UAE Constitution, officially naming the country the United Arab Emirates.
Presidential Declaration on Social Media
The President took to social media to announce the new holiday, saying, "On this day in 1971, the Founding Father and his brothers the Rulers signed the declaration of the Union and the UAE Constitution while announcing the name of our country: the United Arab Emirates. In preparation for the nation’s establishment on 2 December, it was a historic day on which they laid the foundations of the Union. Today, we declare 18 July as Union Pledge Day, a national occasion to celebrate the history of our country and the blessed journey towards establishing the Union."
Another Reason to Celebrate
Union Pledge Day joins the ranks of Union Day, Flag Day, and Commemoration Day as the UAE's fourth national occasion. This new day is all about celebrating the values and principles set by Sheikh Zayed and the founding rulers, which still guide the nation today.
A Day for the Youth
Union Pledge Day is also a chance to educate the younger generation about the UAE’s rich history. It highlights the sacrifices and efforts that went into forming the Union and reminds everyone of the journey that has shaped the UAE into what it is now.
