The Modi-led government is considering renaming India as "Bharat" during a special session of Parliament, according to sources.

In December 2022, Mitesh Patel, a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) representing Anand in Gujarat, brought up the BJP's longstanding request to change India's name to 'Bharat' during a Lok Sabha session. Patel referenced the Constituent Assembly's 1949 deliberation on renaming the country 'Bharat' or 'Bharatvarsh'.

Patel claimed that the name "India" symbolizes the country's historical slavery during the British East India Company era, leading to his call for the name change to "Bharat."

The Narendra Modi-led government is reportedly planning to remove the word "India" from the Constitution, as part of its efforts to "liberate" the people of the country from the "slavery mentality".

Cricketer Virender Sehwag also expressed strong support for the name "Bharat."

The Congress party has criticized the government for sending out invitations for a G20 dinner in the name of "President of Bharat" instead of "President of India.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said that the news that the Rashtrapati Bhawan has sent out invitations for a G20 dinner on September 9 in the name of "President of Bharat" instead of the usual "President of India" is true.
