Students at various Indian curriculum schools across the UAE will enjoy a longer break for Diwali this year, with some schools announcing four-day weekends and others offering up to five days off for the occasion. This extended holiday allows students to fully celebrate Deepavali, one of South Asia’s most significant festivals.

Four to Five Days Off for Diwali

To mark Diwali, a number of schools will close on Thursday and Friday, creating a four-day weekend when combined with the regular Saturday-Sunday break. A few schools are also granting an additional day off on Wednesday, allowing for a five-day holiday period.

Flexible School Calendars Allow Diwali Observance

UAE schools have some flexibility in organizing their academic calendars, as long as they meet the 182-day school year requirement set for international curricula. This flexibility has allowed several schools to observe Diwali more fully this year, with approval from the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) in Dubai.

Celebrating Diwali with Festive Dress Days

Schools are embracing the festive spirit by inviting students to wear traditional Indian attire on Wednesday, October 30. For example, GEMS Our Own Indian School encouraged students to don colorful and traditional outfits in celebration, while also allowing students to opt for their regular uniform if preferred.

Mindful Celebrations in Light of Regional Events

In consideration of the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon, some schools are keeping Diwali festivities low-key this year. Celebrations are limited to educational assemblies, focusing on the cultural and historical significance of the festival.

With these adjustments, UAE schools aim to balance celebration with sensitivity, allowing students to honor Diwali traditions while remaining mindful of broader circumstances.
