The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) in India has directed seven major airlines, including Air India, IndiGo, Akasa, SpiceJet, Vistara, Air India Express Connect, and Air India Express, to expedite baggage delivery following concerns about delays. On February 16, 2024, BCAS issued letters to the airlines, instructing them to implement measures to ensure timely baggage delivery within 10 to 30 minutes after the aircraft's engine shut down, as per regulations.

BCAS conducted a comprehensive survey across six major airports, analyzing over 3,600 flight movements and scrutinizing baggage delivery processes. The directive addresses reported passenger grievances on social media about delayed baggage delivery, in line with the Service Quality Requirements of Operation, Management, and Delivery Agreement (OMDA).
The Aviation Ministry, led by Jyotiraditya Scindia, initiated rigorous monitoring in January 2024, tracking baggage arrival times at designated belts in major airports. Despite improvements, none of the airlines consistently met prescribed standards, emphasizing the need for prompt handling and delivery.
While the monitoring currently focuses on six major airports, BCAS has mandated that airlines extend compliance measures to all airports within their operational scope, ensuring uniformity in service levels. BCAS set a 10-day deadline, expiring on February 26, 2024, for airlines to implement the required measures. Failure to comply may result in regulatory action.
This move highlights BCAS's commitment to enhancing passenger experience and operational efficiency in the aviation industry. Prioritizing timely baggage delivery aligns with improving customer satisfaction and maintaining high service standards across the sector.
