How many years will a facelift take off? Patients undergoing face-lift operations frequently ask this question to their physicians prior to the procedure. Is there really a way to know to what extent plastic surgery can turn back the clock? While beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, a new study conducted in Hempstead, New York finds that artificial intelligence can still put a real number on the success of a facelift.
Super Algorithms
The researchers explained that computer algorithms are not only able to tell a person's age from their preoperative facial features, but they can also put an objective number to the number of years a facelift takes off their appearance. To confirm this, the researchers used a type of artificial intelligence program called convolutional neural networks to examine the plastic surgery results of 50 face-lift patients, by presenting the patients' photos taken before and after the operation to the artificial intelligence program for examination, and besides, the patients also rated their appearance using a questionnaire trying to estimate how young they appear.

Amazing and Accurate Results
The results reveal that the AI system determined each person's "before" age with 100% accuracy, and for the "after" images, computer algorithms concluded that a face-lift takes 4.3 years from a person's appearance, which is much less than what the patients themselves believed, as participants believed that their face-lifts took an average of 6.7 years of age, and here the researchers reported that these algorithms had a much higher 'experience' than the average person at recognizing facial features.
The researchers concluded that neural networks may play a useful role in advising patients and demonstrating successful outcomes of facial rejuvenation procedures. Also, artificial intelligence algorithms could play a role for plastic surgeons in evaluating their outcomes and comparing the results of different techniques.
