In a press statement by its government, the Kingdom of Bahrain announced the launch of a digital COVID-19Vaccine Passport’. It became one of the first countries in the world to do this.

The app which will function as a digital passport is called BeAware app, which was used to facilitate contact tracing, and currently also manages digital vaccine bookings.

In Addition, a green “COVID-19 Vaccinated” shield and an official certificate will be used as a confirmation of immunity.

The certificate should mention the account holder’s name, date of birth, nationality, and vaccine type selected. Meanwhile, validity of the passport will be checked by scanning a QR code that link to the country’s national vaccine register.

In order to obtain the shield and digital certificate, individuals should wait for at least 14 days following the second dose for antibodies to begin developing.

However, while the passport is recognised in Bahrain, it is unclear whether it can be accepted as proof of vaccination when visiting other countries.

Waleed Khalifa Al Manea, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Health and member of the taskforce said that: “despite relentless contact tracing efforts, there has been a rise in active cases, and it is a shared responsibility to ensure communities are safeguarded from the virus.”
