As part of a system of new regulations designed to entice qualified employees and investors from all over the world, the UAE recently launched the five-year Green Visa.

The goal of this new visa, according to Abu Dhabi Residents Office (ADRO), is to open up the employment market and invite exceptional talent to the UAE.

Who can apply for the UAE Green Visa?

A Green visa can be applied for by skilled employees, self-employed individuals, and freelancers.

What are the application criteria for eligibility for Freelancers or self-employed individuals?

  • A freelance/self-employment permit from the Ministry of Human Resources
  • Emiratization paperwork for a bachelor's degree or specialized diploma.
  • Proof of two years' worth of self-employment income totaling at least AED 360,000, or evidence that they continue to preserve their financial stability during their stay in the UAE.

What are the application criteria for eligibility for skilled employees?

  • A legitimate employment contract is required.

  • According to the Ministry of Human Resources, it should be classified into the first, second, or third occupational-level categories.

  • A bachelor's degree or its equivalent.

  • Have a monthly salary of no less than AED15,000.

What are the application criteria for eligibility for investors?

  • ICP approval of the investment in accordance with the investors' rating system.

  • Proof of the investment (If the investor/partner has more than one license, the total invested capital will be calculated).
  • Approval from local authorities with relevant competence.

What are the benefits of the Green Visa?

Compared to individuals who have a standard residence visa, it not only offers a long-term residency solution but also additional advantages to the visa holder's family. Sons up to the age of 25 and unmarried girls of any age may be sponsored, among additional benefits. After the 5-year validity period ends, the Green Visa also provides an additional grace period of six months. One may continue to live in the country regardless of employment. 

What is the process and cost of applying for the Green Visa?

  • Download the GDRFA-Dubai application or visit www.gdrfad.gov.ae.
  • Create a new user account and select the service that's required under Entry Permissions, which is the Issuance of an entry permit for green residence.
  • Select a relevant category, such as skilled worker, investor, partner, or freelance work, and then attach the required documentation.

  • Submit the request after paying the service fees of Dhs2,280.
