Pakistan's former Prime Minister Imran Khan and the country's former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi were sentenced to 10 years in prison in a cipher case on Tuesday, Jan. 30.
A court in Pakistan announced this verdict at a prison in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. The Special Court Judge Abual Hasnat Zulqarnain announced the verdict for the case.
The cipher case is regarding a diplomatic document that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) alleges that the former PM did not return.
The verdict was announced before the general election on Feb. 8 for which Qureshi was cleared for an NA seat in Thar. However, his imprisonment has disqualified him from the elections along with Khan for the next five years.
This is Imran Khan's second conviction after he was convicted in the Toshakhana case on Aug. 5, 2023, and sentenced to three years' imprisonment.
Although, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) had suspended his sentence, a division bench later rejected Khan's petition to suspend the conviction.
This conviction for the cipher case is the former foreign minister's first conviction.
Khan's political party PTI shared a post on X, emphasizing their support and solidarity with both politicians.
