England is experiencing its worst rioting in 13 years following a mass stabbing that killed three young girls. The unrest began after a knife attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance party in Southport, near Liverpool, and escalated into anti-immigration protests. Rioters targeted a Holiday Inn Express housing asylum seekers and clashed with police across multiple towns and cities, including Liverpool, Manchester, Bristol, and Rotherham.
The violence has been fueled by false rumors on social media regarding the background of 17-year-old suspect Axel Rudakubana, a British-born youth of Rwandan descent. Judge Andrew Menary identified Rudakubana, charged with three counts of murder and 10 counts of attempted murder, to counter misinformation.
Far-left agitators have exploited the attack to incite anti-immigration sentiment, leading to violent clashes with police and counter-protesters. Police blamed disinformation for the unrest and urged people to verify information before acting.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the violence as "far-left thuggery" and announced measures to enhance intelligence sharing, deploy facial-recognition technology, and restrict troublemakers' movements. The riots are a significant challenge for Starmer, who recently assumed office following a landslide victory for Labour.
