Abu Dhabi's Department of Culture and Tourism proudly announced the recognition of the beloved traditional dish, Harees, on UNESCO's Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This porridge-like delicacy holds deep cultural significance, often cherished during family gatherings and religious festivities, particularly during Ramadan.

Global Recognition and UAE's Role
The approval came during UNESCO's eighteenth session in Kasane-Botswana, recognizing Harees as a cultural emblem meeting the outlined criteria of the 2003 Convention. The nomination was led by the United Arab Emirates, in collaboration with Saudi Arabia and Oman, reflecting a collective effort to preserve and celebrate regional heritage.
Cultural Significance and UAE's Cultural Identity
Minister of Culture, Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qassimi, highlighted the UAE's dedication to promoting its rich heritage and identity globally. He emphasized how the country's cultural legacy serves as a bridge to connect with diverse communities worldwide, fostering a deeper understanding of its historical heritage and Arab roots.
UAE's UNESCO Legacy Continues
The addition of Harees marks the UAE's fifteenth entry onto UNESCO's prestigious lists, continuing a legacy that commenced in 2010 with the recognition of falconry. Each inscription signifies the UAE's commitment to safeguarding and promoting its cultural treasures on the global stage.
Harees’ Cultural Significance
Harees, a dish prepared by slow-cooking wheat in salted water and then adding meat, predominantly lamb or chicken, holds immense cultural significance. The hours-long preparation culminates in a flavorful dish served with a generous spoonful of local ghee, signifying the depth of tradition and heritage embedded in its making.
