His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has officially approved the Dubai Walk Master Plan, a transformative project set to make Dubai one of the most pedestrian-friendly cities in the world. This ambitious initiative aligns with Dubai’s vision of enhancing urban living and prioritizing sustainability, accessibility, and active lifestyles.

A Vision for Walkable Dubai

The Dubai Walk Master Plan, unveiled in the presence of H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed and other key officials, outlines a 6,500 km network of walkways across the emirate. By 2040, the plan aims to add 3,300 km of new pathways and upgrade 2,300 km of existing ones. Beyond 2040, an additional 900 km of walkways are planned. Key features include 110 pedestrian bridges and underpasses to improve connectivity and ensure uninterrupted walking experiences.

His Highness stated,

"Dubai is committed to creating a healthy and happy urban environment. This project reflects our vision of making walking central to daily life and positioning Dubai as one of the healthiest and most sustainable cities globally."

Integrated Design and Sustainability

The walkways will incorporate greenery, shaded areas, misting systems, interactive art displays, and digital signage to ensure comfort and safety. Routes will be designed to reflect the unique character of each neighborhood, seamlessly connecting major landmarks like Burj Khalifa, Dubai Marina, and the Museum of the Future.

One standout feature is “The Future Loop”, a 2 km elevated, air-conditioned walkway near the Museum of the Future. This iconic bridge will connect 10 key locations, including the Dubai World Trade Centre and Emirates Towers, while providing shaded green spaces and commercial areas.

Pilot Projects and Cultural Focus

The pilot phase (2025–2027) includes the Al Ras Historical Route, which highlights Dubai’s heritage with 15 km of paths featuring public squares, green spaces, and art displays. Walkways in residential areas, such as Al Barsha 2 and Al Mizhar 1, will link communities to nearby attractions.

In urban hubs, roads like Jumeirah Street and Al Muraqqabat will be transformed into pedestrian-friendly boulevards, promoting walking as a preferred mode of transport.

Supporting Dubai’s 2040 Urban Master Plan

The Dubai Walk Master Plan supports the emirate’s ‘20-Minute City’ concept, which ensures that 80% of residents can access essential services within a 20-minute commute. This plan also ties into Dubai’s Quality of Life Strategy 2033, which prioritizes creating livable, interconnected spaces.

The initiative is expected to increase pedestrian and soft mobility from 13% to 25% by 2040, fostering a culture of walking while boosting Dubai’s global appeal.

Technology and Incentives

To encourage walking, a smart app will allow residents to track their steps, explore walking routes, and access reviews and recommendations. Users can also earn rewards for distances walked, redeemable for discounts and other perks.

A City of the Future

The Dubai Walk Master Plan is not just a project - it’s a reflection of Dubai’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and quality of life. With this plan, Dubai is set to redefine urban living, offering residents and visitors a pedestrian-friendly, world-class cityscape that blends culture, connectivity, and modern infrastructure.

Whether it’s a leisurely stroll along waterfront paths or a convenient commute through shaded walkways, the future of walking in Dubai looks brighter - and greener - than ever.
