Dubai-based sustainable developer URB has announced plans for a 93-km climate-controlled cycle highway called The Loop.

The project, however, is still in the research and development stage. If approved, the first phase of the project could be completed by the end of 2023.

The Loop project, which comes in line with Dubai's 20-minute city initiative, aims to connect residents to key services and locations within minutes.

The emirate aims to make walking and cycling the "primary mode of transport" for 80 percent of people in Dubai by 2040.

"It will provide an enjoyable climate-controlled all-year environment to make walking and cycling the primary mode of transport for Dubai’s residents," URB said.

The project will be powered by kinetic flooring allowing it to operate on 100 percent renewable energy.

The cycle and walking route will be a mixed-use facility, featuring spaces for leisure and community services for residents and visitors.
