Dubai Senior Police Officer Says 17 Years Should be Legal Driving Age

Major General Mohammad Saif Al Zafeen, Assistant to the Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police for Operations Affairs, is in favour of 17 year-olds obtaining a light motor licence in the UAE according to a video shared by the Dubai Police.
Maj Gen Mohammed Saif Al Zafein said “I respect all views, but my suggestion comes from a valid point.”
The senior Dubai officer mentioned that school students graduate at the age of 17 and have no form of transportation after graduation.
Some families are spend more to hire drivers for their kids until they’re old enough to obtain a licence, the officer further clarified.
“We know driving a motorcycle is surrounded with dangers, while driving a car is much safer.” said the chairman of the Federal Traffic Council.
On the other hand, teenagers can obtain a motorcycle licence from the age of 17, however the same doesn’t apply for a driver’s licence.
Currently, the legal age to drive in the UAE is 18, those who want to start early can begin their training at the age of 17 and six months
How much does it cost to get a licence in Dubai?
A legal driving licence in the UAE can cost between AED4.500 and AED7000, however that depends on the driving institute and the number tests taken to pass.
Recently, the UAE announced that students aged 15 and above can apply for working part-time. This means that transportation will become more essential while they juggle between university and work.
