Dubai Police Honor Expat Who Saved Five From Drowning SUV
Trainee auditor Shahvez Khan awarded for his life-saving act during last year’s Dubai floods.
Dubai Police have recognized Shahvez Khan, a 28-year-old trainee auditor from India, for his incredible bravery in saving five people from a sinking SUV during last year’s April floods.
In a ceremony at Dubai Police Headquarters, Colonel Ali Khalfan Al Mansouri, Acting Director for Community Happiness, presented Khan with a police medal, a certificate, and a cash award of Dh1,000, celebrating his heroic efforts.
For Khan, the moment felt unreal. “I just did what anyone should do in such a situation,” he said. “When I received the call from Dubai Police, I was in shock. Standing there, receiving the medal, felt like a dream.”
His first call? His family in India. “My mother kept saying, ‘You scared us that day, but today, you’ve made us proud.'” he shared.
Khan’s daring rescue went viral after footage surfaced from April 16, 2024, when he jumped 20 feet into floodwaters near Coca-Cola Arena. Armed with a hammer from a nearby worker, he smashed the SUV’s glass roof to free the trapped passengers—a mix of Arab, Indian, and Filipino nationals.
"I can still see their faces — panic-stricken, pounding on the windows, gasping for air," Khan recalled. " There was no time to think, only to act."
Despite suffering deep cuts on his hands and feet, risking his passion for cricket, Khan says he has no regrets.
“It was never about recognition, but knowing that people remember and appreciate it means a lot. I only hope this encourages others to help when they see someone in trouble.”
