Dubai Police have launched a thorough crackdown on anti-begging during the first two weeks of Ramadan, leading to the apprehension of 202 individuals. Brigadier Ali Salem Al Shamsi, Director of the Suspects and Criminal Phenomena Department at Dubai Police, disclosed this development on Wednesday.
Majority on Visit Visas
Brigadier Al Shamsi revealed that the majority of those apprehended were holders of visit visas, exploiting the holy month's spirit to solicit funds. Of the arrested individuals, 112 were men, while 90 were women. Dubai Police emphasized their commitment to curbing such activities, which exploit people's generosity.
Penalties for Offenders
According to Dubai Police, those caught in the act of begging face a minimum fine of AED 5,000 and potential imprisonment for up to three months.
Moreover, individuals found organizing or facilitating begging activities, including bringing foreign nationals for this purpose, risk imprisonment of no less than six months and a hefty fine of at least AED 100,000.
Public Cautioned and Reporting Encouraged
Brigadier Al Shamsi issued a cautionary advisory to the public, urging them not to fall for the appeals of alleged beggars out of sympathy. Instead, he urged citizens and residents to report any instances of illegal solicitation by dialing 901 or utilizing the 'Police Eye' service on the Dubai Police smart app.
