Dubai Imposes New Truck Restrictions on Emirates Road
Dubai introduces evening truck bans to ease traffic and boost safety.
Dubai is stepping up its game on road safety and traffic flow. Starting January 1, 2025, trucks will face new movement restrictions on Emirates Road, specifically between Al Awir Street and Sharjah during the evening rush hours, from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM.
The initiative, jointly announced by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Police, is part of a larger strategy to regulate truck movement across the city’s busiest roads. It follows similar measures already in place on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and other key routes during peak times.
Why the Ban?
According to Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Acting Assistant Commandant for Operations Affairs at Dubai Police, the restriction aims to reduce the risk of accidents and ease congestion caused by the overlap of heavy vehicles with smaller cars during high-traffic hours.
“The decision was based on a comprehensive study of engineering and technical standards, balancing safety with the logistics sector’s needs,” he explained.
Ramping Up Awareness
To ensure smooth implementation, public awareness campaigns will inform truck drivers and transport companies about the restrictions. These will include road signs, media updates, and social media alerts. Violators, however, can expect fines for non-compliance, so authorities are urging full cooperation.
Hussain Al Banna, CEO of the Traffic and Roads Agency at the RTA, highlighted the broader goal: “These measures aim to ease traffic congestion, enhance safety, and boost the capacity of Dubai’s critical roadways.”
Support for Truck Drivers
Complementing the restrictions, the RTA has launched a developmental plan to support truck drivers. This includes building 19 truck rest areas on major routes like Emirates Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Dubai-Hatta Road. Spanning over 300,000 square meters, these rest stops will accommodate 1,000 heavy vehicles and provide essential facilities like fuel stations, motels, restaurants, and clinics.
Additionally, three integrated stations will cater to drivers’ comfort and safety, offering maintenance services, prayer rooms, and even medical assistance.
A Collaborative Approach
The RTA’s efforts are backed by strategic partnerships with Dubai Police, DP World, and Dubai Airports. Together, they aim to enhance the logistics sector while ensuring smoother traffic flow for all road users.
Whether you’re behind the wheel of a truck or a car, the new rules are set to make driving through Dubai a safer, smoother experience.
