The event was organized by Emirates Auction, Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority, Etisalat, and Du, at the Four Seasons hotel in Jumeirah.
Starting at a bid of Dh15 million, the bids rose within seconds to over Dh30 million, then stagnated for several minutes at Dh35 million.
However, bids started pouring in from various quarters until the price rose quickly to Dh55 million.
The Dh55 million bid was submitted by bid panel 7 who wished to remain anonymous, breaking an existing record set in 2007, when a businessman paid Dh52.2 million for Abu Dhabi's number 1 plate.
All proceeds from the auction will go to the 1 Billion Meals endowment campaign launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Ruler of Dubai and Prime Minister of the UAE, to eradicate hunger and provide food for the underprivileged.
