Dubai Awards Contracts for World’s Largest Airport Project
The Dh128-billion megaproject will take over Dubai International Airport operations in 10 years
Dubai has officially started awarding contracts for the construction of Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC), which is set to become the largest airport in the world once completed.
According to Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman of Dubai Airports, work began over a year ago after receiving approval from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The project, estimated at Dh128 billion, will be rolled out over the next decade.
DXB operations to move to DWC within 10 years
Once fully operational, Al Maktoum International will replace Dubai International Airport (DXB) entirely. The new airport will handle up to 260 million passengers, compared to DXB's current capacity for over 100 million. The transition is planned to happen gradually over the next 10 years.
Months of training planned before opening day
With its massive size, Dubai officials are planning an extended preparation period ahead of the airport’s official opening. Sheikh Ahmed explained that it may take up to 12 months of training to ensure smooth operations, as even existing airport terminals required 3 to 4 months of pre-opening preparation.
Teams from Emirates, flydubai, dnata, and other stakeholders are already working together to coordinate the transition and ensure the airport is ready on day one.
