Dubai Airports Prioritizes Inclusive Travel

Dubai Airports is making huge strides to create a more inclusive travel experience by expanding its autism-inclusive training programme. Now, 45,000 employees across Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC) are trained to help autistic and sensory-sensitive travellers feel more comfortable and supported as they navigate the airports. This move is part of Dubai's goal to become a Certified Autism Destination™ (CAD).

DXB: The First Autism-Certified Airport
Dubai International (DXB) is leading the way as the world’s first international airport to earn the Certified Autism Centre™ (CAC) status, awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). The airport is also Autism-Certified by the Dubai Autism Centre (DAC), ensuring that it’s equipped to provide a welcoming environment for all neurodiverse travellers.
Creating a Culture of Understanding
At Dubai Airports, inclusion starts with understanding people. Majed Al Joker, the Chief Operating Officer, shared, “True inclusion starts with people. By increasing our specialist training by 36% every year, we’re building a culture of understanding and support.” He emphasized that DXB and DWC are more than just airports, they are the first and last impressions of Dubai for millions of travellers, so it’s important that everyone feels seen and supported, no matter their needs.
Training for All Airport Staff and Partners
The autism-inclusive training programme is available not just to Dubai Airports staff but also to key partners like Dubai Police, Dubai Customs, dnata, and airlines like Emirates and flydubai. This ensures that everyone involved in your journey is prepared to provide the best support. The training covers sensory awareness, communication skills, and tips to help reduce anxiety, allowing employees to offer the right help and connect with guests in a way that makes them feel comfortable.
Special Support with Sunflower Pins
One standout feature is the Guest Experience Ambassadors, who are easy to spot thanks to the sunflower pins they wear. These ambassadors are stationed at key areas throughout DXB and DWC and are specifically trained to offer extra support to autistic guests and their families.
Raising Awareness During Autism Acceptance Month
Throughout Autism Acceptance Month, DXB’s Smart Gates are lit up in blue to show support for the autism community. You’ll also see Sunflower symbols throughout the airport, which are an international symbol for hidden disabilities, helping raise awareness and promote understanding among travellers.
Services to Make Travel Smoother
Dubai Airports offers several services to help make the travel experience easier for neurodiverse individuals. The DXB Travel Planner is an online visual guide to help families prepare for their journey ahead of time. The Sunflower Lanyard is a discreet way to signal that a traveller may need additional support, giving them access to priority lanes and a smoother path through security, check-in, and boarding.
Other services include complimentary two-hour parking, dedicated taxis, wheelchair assistance, and the Assisted Travel Lounge in Terminal 2. This quiet, sensory-friendly space offers a peaceful environment for passengers who might feel overwhelmed.
Building a Supportive Community
Through its "We All Meet the World Differently" initiative, Dubai Airports is working with autism organizations, schools, and advocacy groups to raise awareness and ensure that everyone has the best possible travel experience.
With these efforts, Dubai Airports is making travel more accessible, welcoming, and supportive, ensuring that every passenger feels valued and understood.
