Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Iger plans to make a price hike in October on its ad-free Disney+ and Hulu plans and the company also plans to follow Netflix's crackdown on password-sharing.
The monthly price for ad-free Disney+ content will be increased by $3 or 27%, to almost $14.
The price for ad-free Hulu content will be increased by $3 to almost $18, a 20% hike that will make ad-free content more expensive than the most popular ad-free tier at Netflix.
Iger reported Disney's substantial net loss while losing customers in both domestic and international markets for its fiscal third quarter.
Disney has suffered a net loss of $460 million from a year-earlier profit of $1.4 billion.
Iger explained how the price hikes will steer customers toward cheaper ad-supported versions of these streaming services.
However, the CEO did not provide any details on the expected crackdown on password sharing.
Analysts are sceptical of Disney's planned price hacks and crack down on password sharing because they do not believe these initiatives will lead Disney to sustainable growth.
